What I Learned From Watching Game Of Thrones: Northern Inuit Dogs Are The Cutest!

Hey everyone!
(Just as a warning, if you haven't watched season one of Game of Thrones, but want to, don't read further. There will be some small spoilers.)

So, recently I've been really interested in Game of Thrones. Unfortunately I do not have HBO GO, nor do I have tons of spare money to blow on buying the seasons out so far on DVD. Luckily, my boyfriend's mother has Netflix. Not the instant streaming one, the one where she gets DVDs in the mail (I miss when those used to be part of the same thing).

So me and the boyfriend got snuggled in some comfy blankets, eating some really good food, and settled in to watch what we could of Game of Thrones. We finished the first season just a few days ago(so no spoilers about anything upcoming please! It's hard enough to avoid spoilers on Tumblr!), and I absolutely fell in love with the direwolves that belonged to the Stark children.

All of the direwolves are so perfect, and the dogs that play them do such a good job. And oh my gosh are they cute. I don't actually care for the Starks that much (although I do like Arya, and sometimes, only sometimes, I like Sansa and Jon Snow as well.) but I love their direwolves.

(I'm more of a fan of the Lannister's and Daenerys)

Anyway, I learned through watching some of the bonus features on the last disc of the season, that they used dogs called Northern Inuit Dogs for the direwolves. Just look at this cutie, and tell me that he/she is not the cutest doggy you've ever seen:

Picture from Wikipedia
I love how much they resemble wolves. I've never owned a large dog before, but if I did, I would want it to be a Northern Inuit Dog. My boyfriend feels the same, so maybe one day in the future, we'll have a little Northern Inuit puppy to call our own.

And, after looking up so much about these types of dogs, and gushing over how cute they were, I felt a little guilty about not taking the time to gush over the cuteness of my own puppies so I had to take some pictures of them too and play with them a bunch to ease my guilty conscience!

So there is my sleepy puppy with his pretty blue eyes that I really need to take into the vet sometime soon to get his nails clipped. Maybe he doesn't look like a pretty wolf, but he's really cute in his own way too!

Who is your favorite character from Game of Thrones, season one? And which is your favorite direwolf?

Inflazome Grabs Fox Foundation Funding For Parkinson’s R&D

by Nick Paul Taylor |  Mar 25, 2019

Inflazome CEO Matt Cooper. (The University of Queensland)

The Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) has provided funding to inflammatory disease biotech Inflazome. The funding will support research intended to improve the chances that Inflazome will succeed in the clinic.

Inflazome is developing small molecules that target NLRP3 to stop unwanted inflammation. NLRP3 is an innate immune signalling receptor involved in a process that protects against pathogens. But in some people these protective mechanisms spring into life in the absence of pathogens, leading to harmful inflammation that may contribute to a range of diseases, including Parkinson's.

MJFF supported Inflazome's early research into Parkinson's through a grant that led to the publication of mouse data linking a NLRP3 drug to reduced brain neuron loss and higher levels of dopamine.

Now, Inflazome has secured funding to expand its R&D efforts. The latest MJFF grant will support work on a NLRP3-specific positron emission tomography tracer. By developing the tracer, Inflazome hopes to show its drug is binding to target inflammasomes in the brain, thereby increasing confidence that the molecule works as hoped. Inflazome envisages data generated by the tracer informing decisions about the doses tested in the clinic.

Jamie Eberling, director of research programs at MJFF, said the foundation was investing in the research to realize the "significant potential impact on drug development" and aid efforts to "evaluate new treatments that could alter the course of the disease."

The support of MJFF, which has committed more than $1 million to the project, comes at a time when Inflazome is gearing up to start testing drugs in humans. Inflazome raised a €40 million ($45 million) series B round late last year to support its move into the clinic. Forbion led the round with support from backers including Novartis Venture Fund.

The series B established Inflazome at the forefront of efforts to drug the inflammasome, the complex behind the detection of pathogens. Inflazome and its rivals, such as NodThera, think targeting the complex will lead to improved outcomes in inflammation-related diseases including Parkinson's.

I Gave A Big Talk On Indie Games And It's Pretty Good.

Please enjoy this reasonably-priced hour of grumpy ranting.

For a long time now, I've wanted to give a talk about the history of Spiderweb Software. It would be a combination of funny stories about the ancient history of the internet and a summary of everything I've learned about the True Meaning of Indie Games.

At the 2018 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, I finally had the chance to give the talk. I'm really happy with how it turned out. It's about an hour, and you can see it here:

Failing to Fail: The Spiderweb Software Way!

It was really hard to whittle the talk down to 50 minutes. I had to leave a lot of quality material on the cutting room floor. I did manage to keep the best of it around. Hope you like it!

Sensible Soccer (Amiga)

Sensible Soccer title screen
Developer:Sensible Software|Release Date:1992|Systems:Amiga, Atari ST, DOS

Hey I've got a terrible idea, how about I play Sensible Soccer?

I haven't written about a sports game on Super Adventures for about five years now because I realised early on that they weren't working out for all kinds of reasons. These reasons include: I'm terrible at them, I usually don't know the rules, they don't give me much to write about, I often end up with a lot of empty green screenshots with tiny people standing around, and I hate them.

But I'm making a special exception for Sensible Soccer, on account of it being perhaps the most beloved Amiga game ever. It seems to have a spot reserved in every top 100 list right up near the top (unless they've chosen its sequel Sensible World of Soccer instead). Plus the spiritual successor, Sociable Soccer, is coming out soon, so it seemed like a good time for it.

Okay, I'll try to get this over with quickly, with as little whining as possible. I'll show a few screenshots of bland looking menus, a few of me losing a match, then we can both get on with our day.

IBM PCjr. Upgrades Part 2

MONTY PYTHON'S MEANING OF LIFE

If anyone should ponder the meaning of life, it's the anarchic members a British comedy troupe.
The sketches in Monty Python's Meaning of Life may appear less focussed or story-driven than their previous two efforts, but it's no less funny for it. In fact, fourteen years after the movie's cinematic run in 1983, 7th Level created an adventure game out of it that's much more of a game than their previous Python adaptations.

Flames Of War Pershings

With my summer holiday over it's time to be more active in the hobby field again. A month away from work was definitely needed as I was really starting to feel fairly burnt out and frustrated about everything. Couple of weeks in Canada and a few weeks back home spending time with friends, going out, watching movies etc. really did a lot to help bring back some long lost motivation for work, and for painting as well. I've been back to work and a normal routine for about a week now and painting has actually been really enjoyable for the first time in a long while.

First up are some more additions to my Flames of War US forces in the form of a Pershing platoon. A late war entry these didn't really reach troops until the final months of the war and even then only in small numbers. Still it's an iconic tank that saw much use in Korea and formed the basis of further US armor development into the Patton series, so I had to have some. From gaming point of view these are pretty bad to be honest. They are very expensive points wise in Flames of War, but still pretty vulnerable to larger late war AT guns. Fielding more than 3 is nigh impossible and they aren't too survivable then.  Still fun to field every once in a while for a themed list.

These guys were nearly done before I left for Canada, but with the mud effects taking hours to dry they weren't quite finished in time for that. Still it was a good way to start getting back to painting by just slopping on some finishing touches and varnish to get these guys ready.

I followed my normal recipe for US vehicles with a suitable green basecoat with dark yellow modulation. Some chipping and enamel washes for weathering followed by liberal coats of mud. Still haven't really fully figured out the Ammo of Mig mud products that I've started to transition to. They feel a bit too liquid to me and don't really have much texture so building thick coats of mud seems tricky. They've nowadays come out with some thicker stuff as well, so might have to give it a try or then try to mix in some very fine sand to add more texture and grit to the ones I already have.

Aside from the Pershings I've finally received my Skaven Blood Bowl team from a Willy Miniatures Kickstarter and been putting them together. I'd opted for a Deluxe box which included a pitch and transportation foam. After some mishaps those who did so ended up receiving their stuff about three months after everyone else. If I'd known before hand I would have just taken the minis, but originally everything was supposed to ship at the same time.

Alongside Skaven I've been continuing on the next Chaos Space Marine squad. Most of the time consuming work is finished with all the details picked out and the tedious edge highlighting done. I've still got decals to apply and chipping to add before a final panel line wash to make those pop out better. I probably should have gone for a slightly faster scheme to paint, but I do enjoy the look so maybe it's worth the extra time. Hoping to finish them of within a week or so, though a friends wedding this weekend will reduce available hobby time quite a bit.

From a hobby point of view it's forming up to be quite a busy autumn. We have a Flames of War escalation league starting to get new players in and for us older players to start new armies. Also a Shadow Wars Armageddon campaign starting which I was planning to take part in. And finally we are planning to start our 1813 Napoleonics campaign that we'd originally already planned for 2016. So there should be plenty of gaming and painting ahead and hopefully I'll be a bit more active updating the blog as well.
